Landmarks at Newport

August 24, 2020

This summer, we hope you’ve been enjoying the many outdoor activity options provided by our spectacular amenities here at Newport. In addition to everything these amenities offer, our neighborhood is also home to a variety of landmarks and culturally significant monuments and memorials. These sites add a rich historical depth to our already incredibly vibrant location. Read ahead for more information about what to find at these important spots.

Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse

Built between 1906 and 1908, the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse was constructed to provide power for the train line (today the PATH) running between New York and New Jersey. In recent years, the historic powerhouse has faced threats of demolition, prompting the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy to rally around the fight for its preservation.

Jersey City 9/11 Memorial

The Empty Sky Memorial is Jersey City’s tribute to the lives lost to the tragedy of the September 11th attacks. Located in Liberty State Park at the mouth of the Hudson River, the memorial faces across from the World Trade Center site in Manhattan. It was designed by Jessica Jamroz and Frederic Schwartz and the memorial’s name was taken from the Bruce Springsteen song of the same name to reflect the empty sky of the space where the towers once stood.

Lefrak Point Lighthouse

This iconic red-and-white striped lighthouse can be found right here on Newport’s own sprawling waterfront. With stunning views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline in the background, the lighthouse is just the place to bring the family for the day and enjoy all our Waterfront Walkway has to offer.

Colgate Clock

Along the Hudson River, spot the octagonal Colgate Clock, situated at the former site of the Colgate-Palmolive headquarters. The 50 foot clock was built in 1924 to replace an earlier vision of the landmark. The current clock is a memorable feature of the Jersey City skyline.

Liberty State Park

Right within Newport’s own backyard, Liberty State Park offers a variety of opportunities for enjoying the amazing waterfront. The park provides stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan, with access to guided tour options for exploring both. The Interpretive Center at Liberty Park provides educational resources for students and the public wishing to learn more about the park and its surrounding area.

There is so much history and significance that surrounds us right here at Newport. We hope you get a chance to experience some of it for yourself soon!
